Cannot decide on treatment (Multiple Sclerosis board)

19th December 2007
After one year I had my new MRI scan. It showed 4 new lesions, so I decided after 1,5 year since my diagnosis to start treatment. Clinically I would say I am quite well. What I want is to start treatment, see how it goes after one or two if I am Ok, stop the medication and try getting pregnant.

I would really like your advice. One neurologist says Avonex, the other one Rebif 22 and I would like to try Copaxone.

Please could you help?

If you choose the medication route, talk in detail with your neurologist to determine why they think Avonex is the best for you. I do not do meds, but this kind of decision is best made after evaluating side-effects, length of use, and you. Your neurologist may have a good reason to start with Avonex. Ask them directly as they are part of your team. Be sure to letthem know about your pregnancy plans. You might also visit with an OB/GYN to discuss your future pregnancy and what the OB/GYN thinks is best for you and your future child.

I used Avonex for several years and the side effects made it close to unbearable. My neuro asked me to consider Copaxone and I adore it. It literally gave me my life back. And it is my understanding that it is safe for pregnant women to use!

Good luck!

My doctor suggested Avonex simply because it's only once a week. I was scared of the long needle, but I decided to try it anyway.

The shot itself didn't hurt at all. I've had many worse shots and IVs. My tattoos definitely hurt worse. But the side effects after the first three injections were hellish.

After the fourth one I was able to sleep through it. Tomorrow I'll have my seventh. I get bad headaches starting about two hours after the shot, but I take it late so I sleep. In the morning I still feel bad, with a headache, slight fever, and fatigue. But it gets better throughout the day and each week it's a little easier.

I'm glad I tried it because it's only once a week. Doing the injection is a strong reminder that I have a disease--not that I ever forget-- and they do bring me down.

I've heard a lot of people say that they feel bad the days before and of the injection, with Avonex. So far, this has been true for me. I'm not giving up yet though.

The beauty of it is that no matter what you choose, you can always try something else. You may have to just to find the right one for you. We're all different.

My understanding was that none of the DMD's are safe during pregnancy. But no matter what you choose, good luck and have a great holiday!

After 12 years with MS I'm on my first meds.I've been on Rebiff for 9 months and I feel it's going well. All meds are different for every one.Like Nikki says, one size does not fit all.Speak to your neuro and do some research. The sooner the better.MS is a slow oncoming locomotive and won't be stopped. We have to slow it down and that's what meds do.
