12th September 2006
On 9/11/2001 (Really!), I had a prostate biopsy because my PSA was in the 9-10 range and I had the usual symptoms. Thankfully biopsy came back negative. Went on proscar and PSA down to 4.3 in July, 2002; 5.3 in Dec, 2002; 6.1 in February 2004, 4.7 May 2004.
PSA 5.6 in Feb, 2006 and mild symptoms coming back, went on Avodart, symptoms decreasing.
PSA around 6 in June 2006. On June 21, 2006 had PCA3Plus test run (Attentive DRE; urine sample). Test done by Bostwick Labs, PCA3= 3.6. According to Lab, that's "negative."
PCA3 (gene specific) test supposed to be better than PSA, more sensitive. Designed for men with negative biopsies to help decide whether to have another. Since PCA3, symptoms noticeably decreased.
Urologist says he doesn't like rise in PSA while on Avodart. Despite negative biopsy in 2001 AND negative PCA3 last month, he can't "rule out" cancer and recommends another biopsy because of rise in PSA.
I'm thinking that statistically (based on two test results), I should not have "C". I know he can't ever rule out anything definitely, but is another biopsy really necessary? I mean, when is it just BPH?
If anyone has any questions, I'll be glad to try to answer. I know Doc means well but I'd like to see if anyone has any thoughts or comments.
I'm 55 yrs old.
Thanks.
