It is safe but it may make your hormones go wacky. I would say either be on it or be off of it. I'm sure you know this but if you go off of it and start back up the next month you will still probably have to use a backup method for bc for about halfway through the pill pack.
Or, you could try changing the type of pill you're on. I have been on alesse or aviane for about three years and it is a low dose birth control pill. I haven't gained weight, which I am proned to do on bc and it hasn't effected my sex drive. But everyone is different.
It is a personal decision, and unless you are proned to getting ovarian cysts I would say it is safe to go off of them.
