   All these meds? (Diabetes board)

6th February 2008
[QUOTE=Cookie531;3429313]My husband was diagnosed approx. 3 yrs ago as Type 2 diabetic. They started him off with metformin, which ultimately had to be increased to the max. of 2000 mg./day. That didn't work to bring his sugar levels down enough so they then put him on Januvia, 100 mg. a day. Well that didn't work so great either so they now have him on Glimepiride 1mg. a day in addition to the others. Is this normal? Isn't this alot of drugs considering all the press about heart attacks and diabetes medications? Any input would be appreciated.

Linda

The most important thing for someone with diabetes is to keep their blood sugars as close to normal. There isn't such a thing as "too much" medication, unless it is causing lows or severe side effects. The meds which appear to cause heart attacks are Avandia and Actos, and he doesn't seem to be on them, so not to worry.

How are his sugars now? Better, I hope. Keep in mind also that T2 diabetes is a progressive disease, and sometimes no matter how well you take care of yourself, you may still need more medication. As I said, the most important issue is to keep the blood sugars within a normal range to diminish the risks of complications.
