New Here and Need advice! (Diabetes board)

29th February 2004
I am a type two diabetic that was diagnosed almost three years ago when I became pregnant with my son. At the time I found out I was pregnant, I found out the same day that I was a diabetic. My Ex husband and I had problems conceiving, mainly because he is a type one diabetic so we went to a specialist who after learning about my background, suspected that I may be a diabetic as well. My mother is a type two diabetic as well as my brother. My father most recently joined the party but only because he is obese and not because of his medical history. I have gotten to the point where I have gone from one diet to another with no success. No matter how much weight I may lose, the diabetes will always remain with me because of my genes (which is what my Endo is telling me). However, I need to lose weight to get my blood glucose readings under control. My last HGA1c was 6.4 which is okay but my Doctor would like it to be under six and my Cholesterol is through the roof. I take 500 mg of Avandamet 2x day, 1 tablet of Zetia and 1 tablet of Lipitor.

I know that I want to do low carb but the question in my mind is how low do I want to go. I didn't mean to let myself get this way but I did. My Doctor is very against me doing Atkins. He would rather I do the zone. Are any of you on the zone? I heard it is very hard to follow. I just want to lose weight in a safe way (one or two pounds a week). I did the South Beach Diet for a week and lost eight pounds in one week but I felt very restricted and my blood sugar levels dropped to very low levels.

I could really use your advice!

Thanks!

Ilana
