Looking for help - recent diagnosis (Asthma board)

15th March 2004
Hi everyone
just hoping you might be able to offer advice about my symptoms and diagnosis...

I had a virus last November, and went to my GP as my chest felt tight... thoght it might be an infection...GP said all clear - try Ventolin, but go back if no better... I was back 4 days later, and diff GP gave me antibiotics (even tho said no infection) ... a few days later 3rd GP gave me prednisolone for 1 week, and said go back again if need be...

after 6 weeks off work, and copious amounts of ventolin, things settled down and I went back to work in the new year... gradually things got worse again, and after some bad spells of breathlessness - couldn't talk or do anything strenuous - I went back to GP (diff one again)

He said could be a tendency to asthma, prescribed beclamethasone and ventolin and said go back in one month. He kept going back to was I stressed about work or anything, to which I said no more than usual... One month later, though I felt better than before, still not up to anything strenuous. Dr now referring me to specialist as not responding as he would expect, plus prescribed Seretide (250).

It doesn't help we're in the middle of a loft conversion, there has been building work at the office, and cold weather and anything strenuous seems to cause me problems...

symptoms are mainly tightness (almost continual since late January now), sometimes shortness of breath, chest sometimes feel sore/inflamed and other times feels cold, occasional cough, peak flow somewhere between 200 and 300 on drs visits, but no wheezing at all - I sometimes feel a fraud compared to friends who are asthmatic as they seem to suffer more dramatic symptoms.

I'd never had any problems like this before - just usual colds, touch of hayfever ...

also, my 2 kids (now 5 and 3) have both had breathing problems post virus since they were around a year old... but at no time has the dr referred to it as asthma, though they have been prescribed atrovent, combivent and ventolin and beclotide...

any comments most welcome
