How do you find a GREAT allergist? (Allergies board)

2nd August 2007
My son is 10 and has had major allergies since the age of 2 (hives, food and environmental allergies). He has been tested multiple times. Three different doctors have insisted that allergy shots will "cure" him but he has an anaphylactic reaction after the second or third shot each time. He has tried so many different types of meds and nose sprays. We have tried the holistic route. If you can't tell, I am beyond frustrated. Any suggestions on finding someone who will really be able to help him?

By the way, he has been taking Atarax for a few years in pretty high doses. That is the only thing that keeps the hives somewhat contained. This is a very strong medication for such a small boy.

Yes, my son takes Atarax everyday which is an antihistamine. In addition, he took Benadryl an hour before the allergy injection. He is hyper-sensitive.

Is there a difference between an allergist and an immunologist? I am almost certain the allergists he has seen in the past also have immunologist in their title.
