Long term use of Antihistamines..is it safe? (Allergies board)

6th June 2006
here's my story:

I got started getting hives in feb. 2005. I had no idea what those bumps were until they got bigger and bigger! i thought it was mosquito bites or something!?!? anyway, then i got it all checked up and found out about hives. Started on Claritin (didnt work for long, so i dont recommend). Took few steroid pills and allegra...I HATE PILLS...finallyyy Found a DOC that finally answered my questions!! I had "angiodema" 5times (might have it spelled wrong), where my lip swelled up SO BIG, it was scary! I found out by writign down everything I MEAN EVERYTHING that i put into my mouth! My doc told me that angiodema is happening b/c im eating something/digesting something. it could even be the dirt from ur finger nails! anyway, so after going through my lil diary, i figured out that everytime i had ADVIL medication, my lip would swell. So i stopped taking ADVIL and all other aspirin medication. Tylenol is my subsitute now. well my lip swelling has stopped ever since last summer! YAY, but hives still remain :(

For Hives, i take benadryl allergy, and it really helps, however, i get very sleepy at times to where i cant even stay up in class. ITS that bad! im like falling asleep! gets me lazy too.

My doc said that i need to stay on benadryl or atarax, because my system needs to kinnda "drain" out, because of all teh advil prolly in my system. I know it sounds wierd, but i believe him, because my hives are smaller and have reduced, and also i used to take ADVIL for everything, such as headache, cramps, any type of pain. ADVIL was my med! never anything else, because ADVIL was perfect in my eyes! BUTTTT THENNN i read behind the ADVIL bottle that IT CAN CAUSE HIVES!!! i realllllyy REGRET "loving" ADVIL so much. I guess it back-fired, and now im stuck with hives! so i recommend to keep away from ADVIL PLEASE!

Hope this helps anyone, thanks for your postings, i dont feel like im alone with hives!
