Can you use Astelin for eye drops? (Allergies board)

13th September 2007
Do not use a nasal spray on your eyes.. even diluted.

Here is the basic safety information on Astelin summarized from my pharmacological database:
1) Avoid drinking alcohol or taking other medications that cause drowsiness while taking Astelin Spray. Astelin Spray compounds the effects of alcohol and other depressants.
2) Astelin Spray is not made for oral application. Use of Astelin orally may be harmful.
3) Astelin is a nasal antihistamine - [Azelastine hydrochloride, a phthalazinone derivative, exhibits histamine H 1 -receptor antagonist activity in isolated tissues, animal models, and humans.] The steroid error was my brain getting ahead of my typing.. so used to questions on Nasonex. Take care to avoid spraying Astelin Spray in the eyes.

4) Astelin Spray may cause drowsiness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do all those other things you are not supposed to do when tired and sleepy. Using Astelin Spray alone or in conjuntion with alcohol or certian medications lessens your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.

I will not summarize the stuff for children or pregnant women.

Added facts to keep an eye out for:
The following spontaneous adverse events have been reported from the use of Astelin® Nasal Spray and causal relationship with the drug is unknown: anaphylactoid reaction, application site irritation, atrial fibrillation, chest pain, confusion, dyspnea, facial edema, involuntary muscle contractions, palpitations, paresthesia, parosmia, pruritus, rash, disturbance or loss of sense of smell and/or taste, tolerance, urinary retention, vision abnormal and xerophthalmia. Ugh!

Sincerely,
MG

Astelin is not a steriod it's a antihistamine and mast cell stabilizer. I read that off the w.iki for astelin and the actual astelin website which says "ASTELIN is a steroid-free antihistamine nasal spray."

I'd be careful just taking Astelin in general.... I was on it for about a month back in April and it screwed up my body bad. Astelin has a lot of side effects.
