question about stopping meds????? (Allergies board)

13th July 2006
I have been on Allegra and Flonase for the last 8 years (Claritin 3 years before that). I also take Singulair and Astelin for my allergies. I had allergy testing about 10 years ago. I was treated with immunotherapy for grass, trees, weeds, molds, cats and dogs. A couple months ago my symptoms got really bad. I went back for allergy testing to find out if I had developed new allergies. It was frustrating to go through a large box of kleenex in two days when I was on 4 meds for allergies. Imagine my surprise when I found that the immunotherapy was still working for some allergies and weren't for others. I was delighted to find out my tree and weed allergies had lessened in severity. I did find out that my grass, mold, cat and dog allergies had gotten worse and were as bad as you could get. I was glad I had gone back in so I know where I stand throughout the year for allergy severity. I am debating on whether or not to spend the money on futher immunotherapy for grasses or whether to just suffer next year. The doc said he didn't think more immunotherapy for the animals would help.

By the way, I had to go off all the antihistimines for a week before the testing (in prime grass season no less). I was surprised that my allergies weren't worse than they were, but I broke out in hives all week. This was strange for me because I never get hives. Anyway, I went back on all the meds because it was grass season, but I am considering working with my PCP to cut back some in the fall.
