I see you are also in NC. I was in your situation with a grandmother who had ALZ and a Mother that was showing signs. I took my Mom to a memory assessment center in Wilmington, NC (MARS) that is part of UNC-W for cognitive testing. They not only do assessments but also research to find the best way to detect cognitive problems early. If you ****** Memory Assessment Wilmington, NC their web site will come up for you. They will test anybody that is over 55 and it is not expensive. They are aware of the latest medications and will send recommendations to your physician. I was impressed with them.
My mom took every herbal supplement and did everything that promised to prevent dementia. She covered her inabilities for as long as she could but when it became obvious that she had ALZ her deterioration has been dramatic. She was ordering concoctions from health magazines when she should have been on Aricept and Namenda. If I see any indication in myself I plan to make an appointment at MARS and I have made my daughter promise she will see that it is done early.
The best prevention, according to the experts, is a healthy life style. From all I have read, eating right, exercising, and taking care of yourself physically along with using your brain to learn new things is the best thing you can do for yourself.
Hopefully by the time you and I need it there will be a prevention or a cure rather than just a promise of just a slightly slower progression.
I wish for you that you do not have to go through this with your Mom. I will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers.
Love, deb
