Grans, I'm sorry you had such a reaction to the predisone. I would have posted this earlier but I've been away from the computer for awhile. A lot of doctors say taking predisone everyday is alright. Truthfully it depends on the dosage. When I was first diagnoised with RA in 1998, that was all I was put on. I was started on 20mg a day and steadily up till I was taking 40mg a day. For 5 years. I ended up in the dangerous ward in a Psychiatric Hospital. It took 5 days for me to come back from a total psychotic break caused by predisone. I was told by the psychiatrist that they see more people like me than a lot of people know. Predisone is Normally a short term use drug. Only on extremely low doses is it sorta safe for long term use. I now cannot use predisone for even one 10mg dose, I go back to that place which is best described as nasty, and now have a flag on every medical chart I have not to prescribe predisone. This has also knocked me out of being able to use steroids of any kind because the predisone caused polips in my stomach. I've just started back on methotrexate after being off them for 8 months. I was put out of work last November due to my RA, I've lost the ability to straighten my left elbow and both hands are stiffening up. I've had arthoscopic surgery on my right knee because of extreme swelling, there they found a split ligament, a torn tendon and a cyst the size of a quarter- none of which showed on the MRI because of the swollen tissue they removed. I am in constant pain, I now also have Fibromyalgia, Degenerative Disk Disease, 2 bulging disk and arthritis in my spin from the tail bone to my skull. I am taking 12 pills 2 times a day and my rhuemy now want to put me on humeria after I've had reactions to arava and remicade. My husband is as scared as I am to try another medicine, the last reaction almost killed me.....so I know how you feel about being afraid of the meds. I feel so sorry for you, If you only lived in South Augusta on the Georgia side you would have access to Ga. Medical College, there is one heck of a good rhuemy there. The specialist that operated on me for thyroid cancer in 1971 is also still there though he is now a professor.
