Sign of kidney failure? (Kidney Disorders board)

2nd February 2007
I had a severe nosebleed today and had to go to the er to have it chemically cauterized. I've never had anything like that before as it bled heavily for 50 minutes. When I got home I researched on the net and found that severe kidney failure could result in nosebleeds. Has anyone experienced this? I have kidney failure from diabetes and anemia for which I take aranesp. Please help.
Oh and I also take a high dose of diovan, which was increased from 160 ro 320.
Only take 160 mg of aspirin a night. Since 2005 with no proble,s like this.

You know I should have my liver function tested again. I think I did in Oct. and all was well. But my kidneys are failing. The nephrologist should be able to tell me something tomorrow about whether the bad npsebleed had anything to do with the kidneys. He has me on Aranesp and my hemocrit is improving. But I will ask him to do the full battery of blood work tomorrow.

[QUOTE=Isis498;2782284]I wonder why your Dr. says it's ok to take that much aspirin at all. My GFR is 50, and my Neph says NO NSAIDS, or Aspirin, at all. Tylenol only. I guess different Drs., different recommendations.

I need to take aspirin because I had triple bypass two years ago. My surgeon said to never stop taking it for any reaon at all. It protects against stroke and heart attrack.
Today the neprologist ordered up a battery of tests to measure the clotting factor and every other blood lab test. He also gave me another shot of aranesp as my hemocrit is still only at 29. It had been 31 bit he thinks the severe nosebleed might have lowered it. So the aranesp brings it up and then it lowers itself again. I am now on a double dose so I hope it continues to rise.
I don't know whether the lower hemocrit levels are bad for the kidneys or whether raising them improves them. I think it just is healthier for all the organs as a whole. to have hemocrit levels in the normak range which would be a minimun of 36. My all time low was 26.6 last October. But I have been having the aranesp injections sine late Oct. I would think they would be working better than this. Hopefully it was just an effect of the nosebleed and it will go up faster now.
I still would like to know what caused the heavy nosebleed. The kidney doctor didn't seem to have a ready answer. I think it was from the anemia. But who knows?

Have you had your iron levels checked? Maybe the reason the aranesp isn't working is due to low iron in your system. The hormone needs iron to build red blood cells. In addition to the aranesp I also receive iron infusions. Many people with kidney failure do not absorb iron properly so even if you are taking a supplement, that may not be enough.
