Switch from regular Ortho Tri-Cyclen to Yasmin with success? (Acne board)

14th January 2006
I've tried a lot of BC pills in the past (including OTC and Yasmin). About 3 months ago I switched from generic OTC to generic Desogen (Apri). I definitely like the Apri better. Everyone's different, but I tend to like BC pills that have a constant hormone dose, NOT phasic BC pills like OTC where the hormone level changes. Check out this link: www. wdxcyber.com/ncontr13.htm - it might help you with a pill selection.

My daughter tried OTC two years ago and experienced a very bad breakout that would not let up. That breakout led her to want to try accutane (which made things worse). It was bad. Anyway, I agree with the poster who said that the mono-phasic pills are better than the tri-phasic. I've wondered which one she should try next and I think I would suggest Yasmin or Apri. I seem to read the most consistent good luck with Apri. Also, some people love Yasmin and some hate it. It's all trial and error because everyone reacts differently.

Laura, are you taking Yasmin now? Please let us know your results. Good luck and Thanks.

Thanks for finally replying ladies! Sorry if my previous posts seemed b****y! HeHe...I was just getting a little bit anxious about switching pills!! ;)

Peachy - glad you found something that worked for you! I had problems with generic OTC (Trinessa) in my first few months, but got a DAW (dispense as written) from my gyno to get the brand name. Even though it was more expensive, it helped lessen some of the side effects (BTB, moodiness) I was experiencing with generic at the time. I just wish the switch would have helped my skin!
Do you save a lot of money using generic BCP (Apri)? If Yasmin doesn't work out for me (which I hope it does...I am so sick of being disappointed), I might look into it....I know Bordergirl has had success with Desogen! Good Luck!

skimom - I understand what you mean about tri-phasic pills...on OTC, my skin changed every week that the hormones changed. Also, the week of placebo pills (period week) my skin was always more clear! Before I started BCP, I used to break out horribly during the week of my period! Weird how things change huh? By the way, I just took my first Yasmin pill tonight...I will keep you posted on my progress! Good luck with finding something to help your daughter!

bahamagirl - I'm glad your regime is working for you. Whether it is Proactiv or Yasmin, something is working...I would definately keep up your current system!! BTW, did you experience an initial breakout on Yasmin? If so, how long did it last?
I am in a wedding in April, and I hope my skin is better by then...if Yasmin helps get rid of hormonal cystic acne like you said, I will love it!! :)

Bump for peachy to see! :)

Thanks Laura :) Well, the Rosac cream sounds interesting. My skin is also on the dry side, so I could definitely use some extra moisture. Right now, I use Clindamycin Lotion during the day (under my moisturizer) and good ol' Retin-A 0.025% cream (generic Avita version) at night. I'm also taking Mino twice a day + Apri. I'm not too sure that the Clindamycin lotion and retin-a are doing anything (I've been using them for about a year and a half). I'm tempted to try some new topicals, but I don't want to mess things up. Are you liking the Rosac? Have you tried Klaron or Tazorac? The only topical I've tried (besides the Retin-A and Clinda) is Benzamycin, which my skin cannot handle. Anything with Benzoyl peroxide in it makes my skin turn bright red and swollen (even the lowest strength BP). It's weird because when I was in my teens, I would slather on 10% BP and my skin tolerated it just fine. I guess my skin has gotten more sensitive with my old age :)
