No, absolutely not. That is, I know of no adult that gets 12 hours out of XR. Children will. But not adults.
Most adults prescribed XR take 2 back-to-back to get all day efficacy. That means most adults are getting about 6 to 8 hours out of one XR.
Below is a quote from studies done at Harvard Medical School. Of course, the any-drug-is-a-no-good-drug crowd will dismiss HMS shrinks as conspirators in cohoots with the pharmaceuticals but if you are sick of being mauled by ADHD that note:
"Because of their efficacy and long history of use, stimulants remain first-line treatment for adult ADHD. Stimulant treatment trials for adult ADHD that included dosing up to >/= 1.0 mg/kg/day have had higher response rates.[16] Data is emerging to suggest that, if tolerated, such robust stimulant treatments can be safe in adults.[17] Extended-release mixed amphetamine salts, extended-release dexmethylphenidate (both stimulants), and atomoxetine (a nonstimulant) are the only agents currently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in adult ADHD."
To find your weight in kg, divide your weight in pounds by 2.2. That means I can safely take up to 100mg of Adderall IR/XR if necessary and if I can tolerate it. Geeeeeeze, where do they get the 40mg max per day thingy from? I'll tell you where: 40mg max is a good guideline for children. There are few if any guidelines for adults. Every doc shoots from the hip and with an eye on prescription record audits when dosing for adults.
That is, unforetunately, the sad state of adult ADHD treatment in our "advanced" American medical arena. What to do?
Beats me.

Quote from springray:Hi Bob,thanks for helpful tips on generics !;) How would you compare Adderall xr to regular Adderall? I've noticed that regular wears off in about 3-5 hours ,does the XR really lasts up to 12 hours?would really appreciate any "cons " and "pro's" on XR vs. regular. Finally my "to do " list is alot shorter:D thanks:wave:
