Throat never hurt this bad before (Open to All Health Related Topics board)

8th February 2003
On February 2nd, I started off with a low-grade fever. Mid-week I had a higher fever and a sore throat. Now it is the 8th, and I don't care whether I have a fever or not. My throat hurts so badly!!!!! Every time I swallow something. I can't explain how much, but if I rated it on a scale of 1-10, it would be a 10. I went to the doctor yesterday and he prescribed me amoxicillin and diagnosed me with an upper respiratory infection. I've taken the amoxicillin as directed, which is one tablet twice daily. I feel the same. My throat burns!! Nothing will help my throat - not throat lozenges, drinks, food. Did anyone ever have problems with this before?

Absolutely have had this happen to me.. You've only been on the Amoxicillin two days. Give it a chance! Did the doctor take a throat culture to have the lab examine exactly what "bug" you're dealing with here?
And, as the previous poster asked, were you on another antibiotic before amoxycillin?

Thank you all SO much for your replies! I am still feeling the same, and I have taken the Amoxicillin a total of 5 times now. To answer the questions, yes, I was taking some medication before the antibiotics....Tylenol and Motrin. The doctor looked at my ears, nose, and throat, but did not take a throat culture. He didn't say anything about strep throat. I guess he didn't find any "white stuff" back there.
