Afib and scared? (Heart Disorders board)

27th December 2007
First off, a bit of my history with afib. I am now 30 years old but had my first episode at 20, and had to be cardioverted back to a sinus rhythm. I was then put on amiodarone for about a year with no episodes before I elected to have an ablation due to the severe nature of the drug. After the ablation I was drug free and for 6 years all I experienced was fluttering every once in a while but never all out afib. About three years ago I had another episode and was admitted to the hospital, where they were able to convert me using rythmol. I was still drug free and had no problems until this past Friday, when I had an episode and was converted again using rythmol. This time the cardiologist sent me home with a prescription for rythmol twice daily...I also have high blood pressure which in the past was treated with atenlol but has been regulated through exercise and diet over the past three years. Anyway, Through all this I have always been optimistic, and although it was a bit aggravating I would just sort of write it off...it didn't bother me much. This time it is different..I am really scared, and although I have people around me who care, they just don't understand. First, I don't want to be taking this medication for the rest of my life, the side effects are quite aggravating. also, Whats the next step, a Pace Maker...I am only 30...not in bad shape..too young? I just cant stop thinking about this. Is there anyone else out there who is my age dealing with this...I think it would help to know that I am not alone in that respect. Oh well, enough with my rambling...This in itself was somewhat therapeutic.
Matt
