purple2067: optical neuritis... ugghhh! (Eye & Vision board)

14th January 2006
Hi Punkdizzle,

Sorry to hear about your heart problem as well as everything else, does anyone know about amiodarone (anti arrhythmic drug) because I have heard this can cause optic neuritis, does anyone know about this.
I have been on it for a couple of months and know it can cause corneal microdeposits in nearly everyone who takes it. At the moment I don't have any problems with my vision apart from having a few coloured dots in front of my eyes when going from a light room into a dark one and vice versa but I assumed this was normal.
I am on it because I have a congenital heart problem and have arrhythmias, I know someone who has HOCM and they were on it and it solved the arrhythmia problem and they had no problems with their eyes.
Does having optic neuritis make you go completely blind or is it temporary, I'm sorry I don't know much about it.
Please answer, I am worrying about it happening and because it is in my mind I keep imaginging things.

My mom had to be on Amiodarone after her heart bipass surgery. She could not stay on it for very long because she got really sick from it. It made her very nauseous and dizzy and caused lots of other symptoms. It didn't cause her any vision problems though. But given the severity of the symptoms caused by this medication, it doesn't surprise me that it can cause vision problems.
