Quote from notpain:I posted a message in the inner ear forums and someone suggested I read Dr. David Bucholz's book about Migraine Headaches called "Heal your Headache". I went to Amazon to see if they had it and they do and there are currently 116 reviews of the book overwhelmingly positive.
I am ordering the book but while I wait can anyone tell me the foods he suggests you avoid?
Top 10 migraine dietary triggers
Caffeine
MSG (its in nearly everything, not just Chinese food)
Chocolate
Alcohol
Nitrates/nitrites
Citrus
Artificial sweeteners (although Splenda usually isnt a problem)
Nuts (seeds are OK)
Cheese and other dairy products
Fresh, yeast-risen baked goods
3-step program
In his book, "Heal Your Headache," Dr. David Buccholz identifies these steps as a treatment.
1. Get out of the rebound cycle Most doctors agree that rebound from drug treatments poses a problem, but many think you can get away with taking these medications several times a week without a problem. Buchholz has a stricter view, believing its more like three times a month. 2. Reduce trigger level Buchholz says that understanding triggers is a problem for several reasons: The effect can be delayed up to a day or two; the list offered by most doctors isnt very comprehensive; and sometimes the dietary triggers work in concert with other factors. 3. Use preventative medications only if necessary Step one and two might be enough, but if you have a really low threshold, preventative medication can help raise it. However, Buchholz warned, "If you take step three without taking step one, youll probably fail."
rebound-causing medications
Caffeine-containing analgesics (Excedrin, Anacin, etc.)
Butalbital compounds (Fiorinal, Fioricet, Phrenilin, etc.)
Isometheptene compounds (Midrin, Duradrin, etc.)
Decongestants (Sudafed, Tylenol Sinus, Dristan, Afrin, etc.)
Ergotamines (Ergomar, Wigraine, Migranal and D.H.E. 45)
Triptans (Imitrex, Amerge, Zomig, Maxalt and Axert)
Opioids and related drugs (Tylenol with codeine, Percocet, Darvocet, OxyContin, etc.)

Pork Tenderloin in Curry Sauce
This is a quick, easy, migraine-friendly recipe taken from "Heal Your Headache." Dr. Buchholz found that an added bonus of dietary trigger avoidance was weight loss in his patients because they were consuming far less processed, junky types of food.
Ingredients
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon butter
1 diced shallot (do not substitute onion-it's a trigger for many people)
1-2 mashed garlic cloves
1 pork tenderloin cut into 1 inch slices
1 yellow pepper cut into thin strips
1 zucchini cut into thin strips
1 cup thinly sliced mushrooms
1 tablespoon sweet curry
1 tablespoon hot curry
salt and pepper to taste
1/3 cup water
1/3 cup heavy cream
Instructions
Heat butter and oil in a skillet. Saute shallots and garlic for 3 minutes. Add pork; brown both sides. Add pepper, zucchini and mushroom. Cook for 3 minutes. Season with curry, salt and pepper. Add water and cream. Cook for 3 more minutes. Serve with rice.
