Possible causes for onset? (Acid Reflux board)

1st March 2006
I thought my LPR developed after having an allergic reaction to Ampicillin (dizzyness, rash, vomiting, feeling like my throat was constricting). I was given antihistimines and prednisone. Week later, felt like I had a sinus infection in my ear canals, was given antibiotics which made it worse. Dr had me change to a different antibiotic and gave me prednisone. Had sore throat, feeling of lump in throat, problems breathing. ENT scoped my nasal passage and throat - found nothing. Put me on fourth antibiotic and prednisone. Symptoms got worse until my internist suggested I had GERD. Read about LPR and recognized my symptoms. I have always wondered if the prednisone and overuse of antibiotics set it off.

However, I've had bouts of insomnia for five years. My doctor tried to put me on Paxil, which I tried for a few months. I was annoyed by this as my problem was sleep deprivation, not depression. Maybe sleep apnea. I have taken ambien many times over the past three years. Now I am wondering if that did it.

Prior to the ampicillin reaction, no heartburn or other signs of GERD. But I do wonder about the cause of the sleep apnea now.

Did anyone have an onset after using antibiotics and/or prednisone?

I was taking Prednisone after being diagnosed with Pneumonia, and I was takign alot of it to stop a persistant cough. I developed exactly what you described. A feeling of something in my throat, or that it was closing up on me. And it still is there, even after I have stopped taking the Prednisone. My brother in law who is a pharmacist told me it is known to cause these problems. So dont think you are crazy, and whatever you do get off that Prednisone. It will only make you worse. Im so bad now I think I may have GERD or Acid Reflux. I can barely eat without feeling like it is stuck in my throat. All because I took that awful drug. I will never take it again.

No, but there is a definite link to sleep apnea.. insomnia is also a side effect of sleep apnea. I should know.. my whole family has it, allergies, and reflux. If you have not been to a sleep specialist and had a sleep study done. Request one.

Sincerely, MG

Some have had complete cures of insomnia, and reflux by gettin a CPAP(pressurized air flow device to help prevent the closing of your throat during sleep) for obstructive sleep apnea.

Good luck finding an answer.

Sincerely,
MG
