Quote from PhyllisAnn:I am have been recently diagnosed with diabetes..about a month ago. I'm taking Amaryl...2 mg in the morning..and 2 mg. at night. The pharmacist may be right..start off with a small dose..and see how it does before increasing it. Does he use his glucometer often? I'd say..while trying the new meds..I'll check it 3 times a day at least. When he wakes up...perhaps before lunch or before supper..and then at bedtime. Now..I'm not an expert..I'm still learning things, but he needs to keep track of his blood sugar and see how much its' dropping. If it's not dropping enough...then probably increase the dosage. I started off...with just 2 mg. in the morning..but would wake up in the morning..and the blood sugar would be high. So the dr. told me at first to take a half pill 1 mg at night...but that didn't lower it..so he increased it to 2 mg..a night. It seems to finally be leveling off. But my blood sugar hasn't gotten in the 300's yet..not that I know of..unless it did that before seeing the dr...and getting diagnosed. The highest it has gotten since being diagnosed was 220. I was averaging in the 160's to 180's..but since then it's dropped..thank goodness.
Amaryl works with the pancreas. it helps your body produce extra insulin after meals, so it can carry glucose into your cells to be converted into energy. You should take it 30 minutes before you eat.
Metformin works with the liver, that is something that should be taken before bed to help turn off liver dumps in the middle of the night (dawn phenomenon). The side effects of Metformin will taper off if you put some time between taking it and any carb intake. I take Metformin and I don't have any nausea or diarhea anymore. I take it at 10pm and then in the morning 1 hour before breakfast.
This post I responded to is about a month and a half old so the poster may never see my $.02.
Oh well...
