   Atenolol and Glucose (Diabetes board)

9th November 2003
Quote from Bea:
Has anyone heard of , or experienced, an increase in glucose levels after taking atenolol for high blood pressure? If so, what other high blood pressure medications were recommended to control blood pressure without increasing glucose levels?

Bea

This link suggests metabolic changes and glucose control may be a problem with atenolol.

There are good studies which suggest benefits for diabetics in taking an ACE inhibitor for BP. Altace is a common one.

I was taking 25mg atenolol before I was diagnosed with diabetes four months ago. The doctor immediately changed me to 5mg Altace, saying it would give more protection for my kidneys. It also lowered my blood pressure from 135/85 to 115/68, which is good too.
