Gout & Diuretics & aspirin (High & Low Blood Pressure board)

1st August 2007
One last thought on how uric acid relates directly to hypertension.

There is only ONE BP MED that casues uric acid excretion. THat med is LOSARTAN (aka Cozaar.) Alas it also causes excretion of allopurinol which mimics uric acid (the chemistry is FASCINATING.)

BUT for hypertensives trying to avoid/control gout withOUT using allopurinol, it seem to me that the ideal, though weak antihypertensive is COZAAR.
Curiously, none of the other ARB meds have this quirky effect. Thus losartan shines above the other ARBS with better prognoses even though it doesn't control BP as well.<>
