Which Inhalers have the LEAST side effects and really help? (Asthma board)

30th January 2005
I am on albuterol and I have heard some not so good stories about Advair and don't want to take Singular because I feel that it's so new that in 2-3 years or more, it's going to be pulled off the shelf because of something in it that damages the lungs, so I would like to know what inhalers are the best?

It's not as effective as the others, and they haven't developed a stable inhaler form, so it is nebulizer only.

Nebulized Xopenex is just as effective, if not more effective, than albuterol in the inhaler or nebulizer. In fact, there was a study saying that the isomer that is present in albuterol, but not in Xopenex, has been linked with irritation of the airways. That is, when used without an inhaled steroid, albuterol can cause worsening asthma symptoms in the long run.

The only inhaler that I am on is the Albuterol because the others, you have to rinse out your mouth and for one, I don't have time to run and do that everytime I use my inhaler (like if I'm in the car or something) and two, I'm always scared that I will get thrush from it.

I have found Advair to be a life-saver. You do have to rinse your mouth, like you do with all inhalers that contain steroids, but you only take it twice a day. I was using my albuterol inhaler 15-20 times a day. My doc put me on Advair and the very next day I stopped needing the albuterol totally. Since I've been on the Advair, I'm using the albuterol maybe once every two weeks. I haven't experienced any side effects from it. I just take it before I brush my teeth in the morning and at night. I don't know what I would do without it, though.
