   PFT's (Asthma board)

24th January 2004
Quote from asgusbar:
Another name for silent chest is called "wheezeless asthma". I have it as well. There are no wheezes when I am at my worst because there isnt air to move.
Once meds are administered and they open me up some, sometimes the wheezes come. One of my favorite ER tricks is when I am sitting there dying and the doc says...."Well, no wheezing and when you are sitting up straight with the O2 on you sound fine and your pulse ox reads 96 and your peak flow is 300." I could say...oh yeah get a blood gas but that really hurts! I have them lay me flat for 20 minutes with no O2 on and just keep the pulse ox on. Low and behold....my numbers go from the 90's to the 80's to the 70's and all of a sudden people are running. This happened to me on the OB floor too and the whole floor came in to learn about wheezeless asthma and about how the astmatic usually knows what he or she is talking about.

ya...I NEVER wheeze with my asthma..I only wheeze when I'm on narcotics 4 my cough(I have cough variant asthma..as well as I do get short of breath). Makes me mad when doctors don't take you seriously cuz you don't wheeze! My doctor told me when my PF's hit under 300 I should be in the hospital..and I recall being in a doctors office(it was one of those urgent care but not hospital places), and not getting over 170 PF's..and what did they do there? NOTHING..b/c I didn't wheeze!!! The doctors there told my parents I was just "tired" and to take albuterol until I felt better! Of course the next day I saw my regular doctor & he was amazed they hadn't sent me over to the hospital.
