Hi,
I've gotten cold sores ALL my life, since drinking out of a dogs bowl when I was a baby and crawling..YUK! gotta keep an eye on those little ones at ALL TIMES..:)
anyway, they've gotten much better (smaller) with age, but I always have a tube of Acyclovir 5% and Acyclovir pills at the ready. I try not taking the pills unless I can tell it's going to be a bad one. Usually applying the cream as soon as I feel it coming on helps. But I agree with a previous poster, Abbrevia seems to work really really well. I don't think that taking Valtrex is a good idea although it's probably as good as me taking Acyclovir. Doctors are too quick to pop you full of pills, I'd suggest the Abbrevia, white vinegar compresses (mix 2 parts vinegar with 1part warm water and apply with cottonball/pad for about 10 minutes, two - three times a day, if your coldsore has gotten big and tore your lip this WILL hurt, but it does speed up healing) also the tea as another poster reccommended.
Usually I get them when I get an upset stomach from "heavy" foods or sunburn/windburn or fever or cold/flu, I constantly have to have my lips moisturized or they'll dry and crack which is the coldsore's favorite type of lip.
Anyway, good luck! I was told by the doctors a long time ago, that once you get these you will always have it, because it is a form of herpes that lives in your system. bah!
