How Long Before Your Vision Improved After Vitrecotmy? (Eye & Vision board)

28th February 2007
How is your doctor treating the swelling? I assume with drops, and if so, what kind? I have similar symptoms - swelling - and my doctor has had me on Pred Forte and Acular for a lot longer than the labels reccomend. (If my swelling fails to come down, he wants me to undergo a vitrectomy.)

I have cystoid macular edema which is the swelling in the eye. I may have even had it before my vitrectomy surgery in October. My retinal specialist told me before I had the vitrectomy that he believed that once the swelling went down I should notice a significant improvement in my vision. All I know is that the swelling is coming down very gradually. So far I don't notice an improvement, but from what I have been reading it sometimes takes up to a year for all the swelling to go down.

As long as my doctor is seeing an improvement every time I go, I guess I will just have to be patient, which to me is a hard thing to do when it comes to your vision. I was on pred forte for a couple months after the surgery, but not I am only using acular 3 times as day. I do not have to see my retina specialist now for 3 months. ( I just went on Monday)

I am to continue with the acular and hope that it does its magic by the time I go back in May. Mine is taking longer than some because he said I had a very large thick membrance that he peeled back during the surgery. He said he is not surprised that it is taking long than usual for improvement. As long as it happens, I will be happy.Hope everything goes well for you. [COLOR="Purple"]

The warnings that come with pred forte and acular are what concerned me. They contend that all kinds of bad things, especially a rise in pressure, can happen if you use them for more than 10 days. Maybe that's just in rare cases. My doctor has me on both, to be administered 5 minutes apart. Maybe I'm just a "worry-wart". Thanx for the reply.

I said I was going back in April but actually it is the end of May.I have the utmost confidence in Dr. A at Kresge. He has been voted one of the top retina doctors in America since 1994 so I do believe he knows what he is doing.

Like he told me I had one of the thickest membranes he had seen in a long time which is the reason it is taking longer for the swelling to go down. He does tell me it is gradually coming down and when it does he believes I will notice a noticable improvement in the distortion in the right eye. If he was not seeing improvement with every visit, I would definately be more concerned, and if it were to continue for several more months the way it is I would ask him about possible other treatments besides acular.

I am sure a place as well known as Kresge would know all aboout the latest and best treatments. Like I said people from all over the world come there, even as far as Korea.

I appreciate all the info for have sent my way and I certainly will keep it all in mind. I will let you know how I am progressing after my next visit.

I have been reading your posts regarding macular pucker and am really confused as to what I should do. I have the same problem and my vision has deteriorated to 20/200 although it is not interfering with my daily activities and i am lucky to have vision corrected to 20/20 in the other eye .From what I have learned there is not much vision improvement from the surgery and many risks. I realize every situation is different but would like to hear from others and get your opinions.
It sounds as though you have been through so much. I hope your vison has improved. Responses would be appreciated.
