   Byetta Feedback? (Diabetes board)

24th April 2007
My husband vomited so severely that he refused to continue with it. On Amaryl and Actos his readings were 200-300 anyway with drinking 5 to 6 Cokes per day. One week after stopping ALL softdrinks and sugar and taking
bitter melon caps and fenugreek caps his readings are 91-127. He uses a sugar substitute and has lost 35 pounds. He's 65. I never dreamed he would quit a 30+ year soda pop habit so suddenly. He must have Really trusted that sweet little doctor's assistant!! She also had him stop orange juice. He was actually poisoning himself with SUGAR. No wonder it used to be called SUGAR DIABETES. We older people know that!

Hello All - been busy with job concerns lately so haven't had time to post.

My endoc is pleased with my numbers, but, my body is SOO out of whack lately.
The Byetta makes me slightly nauseous and constipated sometimes. For a while was doing OK, my appetite had returned, but after Byetta it goes away. Of course, when your appetite returns you want to eat MORE, and that's counter-productive to the medicine.

Been reading posts on your/spouses reactions to the drug and you all have my sympathies. On the hand, I see some success stories, too!

One thing I forgot to mention AmieSue, I am that rare patient, who is NOT obese. I'm in my mid-50's and was diagnosed in my mid-40's. But, I was always skinny until Kaiser put me on Actos. Then, I blew up like a balloon. Ultimately, one of the docs took me off actos, thank goodness. Now, I'm skinny again, but still have the mid-life tummy (though it's decreased in size a bit lately). It's the same kind of tummy that African men/women get when they get on Western food. And that's what does it - trans-fats at Denny's or Applebees' or wherever you go. Now that I'm on Byetta, those big roadside diner portion just make me want to puke when I look at them! I feel like I want to nibble small portions all the time.

My only thought on Byetta is: what is IN this stuff that makes people so sick?? Do we know?? My husband vomited 4 times and never touched it again, he then lost 30 lb simply from stopping soft drinks. I just do not believe that anything that makes you vomit is good for anyone. Even if your body allegedly "gets used to it."
He eats lots of real butter, pancakes, waffles but no soft drinks or pastries and lost all that weight with no exercise. He takes a Little Actos, Amaryl (dangerous, IMO), bitter melon and fenugreek. Do a search on Avandia if you're on that.
