percocets and itching (Addiction & Recovery board)

Hi Wendy --

Your statement "only happens when I take more that I should" is a key --- irritating your liver with the acetaminophen part of Percoset causes the itching. Also - bruising easily, yellowing of the eyes and/or skin.

I thought itching was just a common side effect of opiates especially percocet. I know Hives can be dangerous. I have always itched using any narcotic medications and there was never much concern expressed toward the side effect. Only if I had difficulty breathing, swelling of lips/throat etc. Am I wrong? I am taking it right now (as prescribed) and itch from it. I would really be curious to know. I know itching can be a sign of liver issues.

PS: I read that one should not take more than 8 pills each containing 325mg of acetaminophen a/day (The HIGHEST amount). Not referring to the opiate part of the percocet at all. Is this true?

hmmmmmm....now I just read another site that said no more than 4000mg of ace./per/day....hmmmmm
