Asprin vs Acetaminophen? (Open to All Health Related Topics board)

15th November 2006
Hi  Acetaminophen (Tylenol) does absolutely nothing for me. I take Ibuprofen (Advil) for TMJ pain, and I take at least one does (800mg) on a daily basis. I have done research on liver disease. Long term use of Acetaminophen can cause irreversible liver disease, but only rare cases with long term use of Ibuprofen. In a search engine, type "drug-induced liver disease", for information and answers to your questions.

As far as Asprin, I don't know much about the side effects of long term use. I do know that it thins your blood, which causes clotting complications.

My husband uses Excederin Migraine, but not on a daily basis. I would talk to your physician. Maybe you could get a prescription for a med that you could take on a regular basis. Hope this helps.

do you have links for those suggestions (single entity analgesics other than phenacitin causing analgesic nephropathy, the 3000mg/day limit on acetaminophen)

Paracetamol (acetaminophen) 1gm 4 times a day is the baseline treatment for osteoarthritis in Australia and New Zealand, to the extent that the government health system allows 300 x 0.5gm paracetamol tablets per monthly prescription.

Quote from BigBlock21:
I was diagnosed with migraines about 5 years ago...although not very severe, I get headaches about 3-7 days a week, but usually no more than once a day. That means I take a lot of Excedrin. I'm just wondering if taking it almost every day is a bad thing? Is it going to hurt my stomach or liver? Should I switch to just asprin or just acetaminophen? (Excedrin is a mix of both)

I ended up with a deep ulcer from taking excedrin for almost daily headaches.

Is nexium over the counter yet? If so, take that for a month or two - and it would heal any ulcer.

As far as your liver I believe you shoulcn't take more than 4000 mg which excedrin has 250 of acetaminophin...so that would be 16 tablets a day and if you take that much you're going into the danger zone ESPECIALLY IF YOU DRINK OR TAKE ANY OTHER MEDS.
