anyone gained alot of weight from taking advair? (Asthma board)

29th November 2002
Hi everybody! I am new to this board. I have been on Advair for about 2 years. It worked great in the beginning. I am 54 but have never had a weight problem. Just lucky. I have gained about 8 pounds since I started Advair. Then about a month ago I noticed alot of voice problems. I have been very hoarse for about 3 weeks. I decided to go off the Advair 2 weeks ago. Developed a bad case of congestion. I went back on accolate. I hope this works, my doctor also put me on 1000 mg. of biaxin. I hope this works and my voice goes back to normal. Has anyone else had voice problems from Advair? Glad I found this board.

Not advair specifically, but I had voice problems with Flovent. I sing, so I noticed them right away, and it took me about three seconds to get REALLY annoyed with them.

So I switched to pulmicort, and life is good I'm now taking Symbicort, it's a combo kind of like advair except instead of Serevent it's got Oxeze in it (I think in the States this is marketed as Foradil) and it works like a *charm*.

I hope the accolate is working well for you, I've never tried a leukotriene receptor antagonist, I hear they're kind of a hit-and-miss thing, either they work REALLY well or they don't work hardly at all. I hope you're in the former -- I understand the list of side-effects is rather short.

There are other inhaled corticosteroids on the market, that are available in different formats. The powder is hard to take if you have severe asthma because you have to generate a very high peak inspiratory flow to get the powder to not deposit in your mouth. Many have found taking Flovent MDI and Serevent MDI with an aerochamber or spacer instead of just taking advair was mildly more inconvenient but worked a bunch better.
