   abilify (Anxiety board)

16th April 2006
First off, Abilify is not commonly used to treat anxiety; it is a mood stabilizer used primarily for bipolar disorder. Some people with anxiety disorders, myself included, are on a mood stabilizer to help with other conditions (I use Lamictal for my Asperger's). I find it interesting that Abilify is making you feel restless and more anxious- it's supposed to help both of these symptoms, common symptoms found in mania and mixed episodes. If you only have anxiety, you may want to consider asking your doctor to put you on a benzodiazepine or an SSRI, not a mood stabilizer.

Actually, Abilify is an Anti-Psychotic to treat the positive symptoms of Schizophrenia, and psychosis in Bipolar and other disorders.

Some psychiatrists use Abilify, or other anti-psychotics, in smaller dosages for hard-to-treat anxiety. The general dosage when taking Abilify for anxiety is about 2 to 5mg.

Considering the category Abilify is in, it is known to cause restlessness for most users. However, incrased anxiety differs from person to person. If the increased anxiety and restlessness do not subside after 2 weeks, I'd call your doctor for an alternatnative medication.
